Playing Golf with Strangers: What to Expect

By MyFoursome · Published · 5 min read

Most recreational golfers play with strangers regularly — getting paired by the course, joining an open foursome, or filling a spot at the last minute.

It can feel awkward going in, but golf is one of the most social sports there is. A four-hour round with strangers usually ends with people exchanging numbers.

General guidance, not a guarantee of results. Course policies and competition rules vary. Joining or hosting a MyFoursome game does not itself reserve a tee time.

The first tee introduction

Walk up, introduce yourself by first name, and shake hands. That's it. You don't need to explain your game, your handicap, or how long you've been playing unless they ask. A relaxed intro sets the tone for the round.

Talking about your game

If money games or a friendly match comes up, be honest about your handicap. Sandbagging — pretending to be worse than you are — poisons the group dynamic fast.

If you're a beginner, saying so upfront takes all the pressure off. Most golfers are genuinely happy to play with newer players.

Conversation on the course

Golf is social but also focused. Read the group's energy. Some people want to chat all the way around; others prefer quiet between shots. Follow their lead.

Safe topics: the course itself, where you usually play, the weather, recent rounds. Avoid politics and anything that could derail the mood.

Handling a bad round

Everyone has them. Apologize briefly if you're holding up play, but don't narrate every bad shot. Nobody wants to hear a running commentary on what's wrong with your swing.

Stay positive, keep moving, and your playing partners will respect you for it.

After the round

If you enjoyed playing with someone, say so. Swap numbers or connect on MyFoursome. Some of the best regular playing groups started as a random pairing.
